CONGRATULATIONS
BOULDER HIGH LEADER'S CHALLENGE STUDENTS! A group
of six juniors at Boulder High School have been involved in a year-long community service organization. These civic-minded students volunteered their time throughout their busy year at school. They attended weekly meetings and were involved in monthly philanthropic projects. They were required to organize a year-end project incorporating all skills and values that they learned during the year.
These students, Sofia Laguna, Megan
Schwartz, Sarah Waldner, Vince Szilagyi, Megan King and Austin Reed
decided to organize a benefit concert for the girls.
The concert was held at the Fox Theater on May 11, 2008.
The girls sang and danced traditional Sudanese songs as the opening act. This was followed by 4 bands who donated their time and talents to help the cause. The bands were "Tyler Ward", "Saving Verona", " The Autumn Film" and Boulder High's own "Mohney and the Groovemachine" . The concert raised $2500.00 in ticket sales and donations for the education fund.
At the
concert, the BHS student also had a petition available for people to sign. The BHS students are concerned that once the girls turn 21, they are required to leave the high school system. This would require they pay tuition for any continuing education. The BHS students hope that the district and state would make exceptions to this age limit in special circumstances such as this.
On Sunday, May 18 the BHS students attended a year-end convention for Leader's Challenge students from around Colorado. The 42 high school teams presented their final projects to hundreds of spectators. The grand prize for the best final project was awarded to Boulder High! Congratulations Boulder High Leader's Challenge students.
CSAW's CULTURAL DIRECTOR GRADUATES FROM CU On
May 9, 2008, CSAW's Cultural Director Micklina Peter Kenyi, became the first "Lost Girl of Sudan" to graduate from the University
of Colorado, Boulder. Micklina was honored by the Dean of her college and gave a speech at her graduation ceremony. Over 40
Sudanese travelled to Boulder from all over the world to celebrate this joyous day with Micklina and her reunited family.
We are so proud of Micklina's accomplishments. Last year, her fiancé Omunu Abalu, graduated from CU magna cum laude. Both
Micklina and Omunu are fine examples of how seriously the Southern Sudanese culture values education.
